Stan Wawrinka made a first-round exit at the Aegon Championships on Tuesday.

The second-seeded Swiss, who reached the Roland Garros final earlier this month, fell to 2014 runner-up Feliciano Lopez 7-6(4), 7-5 in one hour and 31 minutes.

Lopez was more attuned to the slick Queen’s Club lawns, having contested five grass-court matches last week en route to the Mercedes Cup final in Stuttgart (l. to Pouille).

“When you play Feli on grass, you know that it’s going to be a tough match anyway,” said Wawrinka. “He’s playing with confidence from last week, making the final.

“Today was tough match. I’m really sad to have lost it. I think in general for first match on grass, the game wasn’t that bad. I was serving quite well. There is still a lot of work to do physically and on my tennis, on my game, to be in a better place on grass.”
